Are Your Shoes Causing Your Urinary Tract Infections?
>> December 28, 2007
Are you forever in high heels? Your stilettos just may be the cause of your urinary tract infections (UTIs). Sounds crazy, but according to Larrian Gillespie, M.D., a Beverly Hills urologist, it's true!
High heels make the pelvis tilt forward and the back curve out. This causes lordosis, a condition that creates pressure on the sensory nerves in your lower spine. When the nerves are compromised, your bladder can't empty properly, and the next thing you know, you've got a UTI.
Take this test to see if your shoes are too high. Put on your heels and check your side view in a full-length mirror. If you have an arch in your back, you're setting yourself up for problems, says Dr. Gillespie.
If you're like my good friend, and just can't forgo the heels, you should start working on strengthening your stomach and back muscles, which will help stabilize your pelvis. WOW! Now that's interesting! People don't realize how important good shoes are to their health. My boyfriend suffers from leg pain constantly. I realized he had the same pair of sneakers for years. I got him new ones for Christmas and he's already doing MUCH better!

That's a good reason not to wear heels. I actually stopped wearing them when I was in my early twenties. I just decided I didn't want to be uncomfortable anymore.
I have horrible feet due to an inherited condition. My Dr. said "you need to always wear resonable shoes."
"No Problem" I told him. "I gave up cute shoes years ago!" :)
My friend, however, is 5'2" and won't go anywhere without her heels on. -- Even NASCAR races!! :)
Hey Angie - Great Post. I have linked to it in my latest post on my site that talks all about High Heels and their curse on womens feet and posture. Sorry to hear about your feet - I do some integrative movement strategies that has really helped some of my clients - if you need some ideas let me know, I would be happy to help you out.
