Pre-Race Caffeine May Improve Your Times
>> August 19, 2008
Want to run like Angelo Taylor? Then you may want to run through your local Starbucks first!
A recent study investigated if caffeine ingestion improves 5-km time-trial performance in well-trained and recreational runners. The result was that both groups of runners advanced by an average of 10 to 12 seconds (1.1% - 1.0% better) than those taking a placebo.
So for that extra kick, try downing a double espresso or a tall coffee (subjects were given 95 mgs of caffeine, the equivalent of an eight-ounce cup of coffee) 30 to 60 minutes before competition.

Interesting post although it does make sense as caffeine is a stimulant. I also find that taking creatine about 30 minutes before a run gives me that little bit extra.
I used to drink a little caffeine before starting a long training walk. I helped to get me going.
