Probiotics - What Are They And Do You Need Them?

>> February 26, 2008

If you watch any TV, I'm sure you've seen the ads for Dannon Activia. They claim that by eating their low-fat yogurt you can regulate your intestinal tract. What makes their yogurt different? It's because of the active probiotic cultures they've added.

Probiotics, in general, have gained much exposure in the past few years. Once a term that only doctors knew, they are now widely recognized by most everyone for their beneficial properties. So what are they?

Probiotic means, literally, “for life.” Probiotics are, simply, live microorganisms (bacteria) that improve the balance of the intestinal microflora.

Everyone has bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract. Most of the bacteria are present in the colon where there may be as many as 500 species. Most of the species are harmless and many are actually helpful, preventing infection and aiding in digestion. However, antibiotic use, disease, aging, bouts of diarrhea or vomiting, diet, the environment, hormonal changes and your stress level can all contribute to altering the balance of the microbial flora which, in turn, can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, yeast infection, canker sores, and more.

By supplementing with probiotics, the good microbes that you will be adding will work with the body’s immune system to keep the bad microbes at bay by crowding them out. Research has shown that this “good” bacteria helps not only to stimulate digestive health, but may actually stimulate an overall healthy immune system.

Probiotics may also help you in your quest to lose weight. After all, a healthy digestive system increases energy and improves your metabolism, both critical factors in a responsible weight loss program.

In most cases, since probiotic microbes do not cause disease, there’s no such thing as having too much of them, according to Gary Huffnagle, Ph.D., of the University of Michigan Health System. And, Huffnagle points out, foods rich in probiotics taste good. However, unhealthy people with weakened immunity should be cautious. Researchers at the University Medical Centre in Utrecht, Holland, said their results were proof that "extremely ill" people should avoid probiotics, and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has ruled that supplements should not be given to patients in intensive care, those with organ failure or anyone being fed through a drip.

Organic Or Natural, Are They The Same?

>> February 19, 2008

Wanting to do what's best for yourself and your family, you may try to buy mostly organic or natural products. But do you know the difference between the two?

For a label to earn a USDA-certified organic seal (like the one above), it must meet specific government standards -- organic meat, poultry and dairy come from animals that aren't given hormones or antibiotics and organic crops are grown without using most conventional fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, or bioengineering.

Natural, on the other hand, is loosely defined as not containing synthetic preservatives or artificial color or flavor; the term is not regulated.

So, though many foods labeled natural are healthy, some, like all-natural soda and chips, are still loaded with calories and sugar.

Eat More Mushrooms!

>> February 15, 2008

Once thought of as having no nutritional value, mushrooms, it seems, are very good for you.

  • Tufts University researchers found that white buttons ward off viruses and tumors in mice by boosting the immune system's killer cell activity.
  • When it comes to selenium content, mushrooms surpass all other items in the produce category.
  • A medium portabello mushroom contains more potassium than a banana.
  • Mushrooms are good sources of three essential B-vitamins: riboflavin, niacin and pantothenic acid.
  • Vitamin D is highly touted right now because it's believed that most people do not get enough which can cause digestive tract problems, fatigue, insomnia, apathy, and possibly even memory loss.. Did you know that button mushrooms are one of the few natural food sources of vitamin D and provide 15 IU per serving?
  • Mushrooms are recommended on Bob Greene's Best Life Diet. They should be since cup for cup, swapping rice or spaghetti for mushrooms can save up to 200 calories. Do that twice a week and you can drop 6 pounds in a year!

Hold The Lemon?

>> February 12, 2008

That lemon wedge they put on your drink at your favorite restaurant might just be harboring disease-causing bacteria. Anything from germs that cause staph to fecal bacteria.

Microbiologist Anne LaGrange Loving, M.S., M(ASCP), Assistant Professor of Science, Passaic County Community College, and her team took samples from a total of 76 lemons from 21 restaurants and found that 77% (2 out of 3) had bacteria on them.

Although the microbes found on the lemon samples all have the potential to cause infectious diseases at various body sites, the likelihood was not determined in this study and there is no evidence of reported outbreaks or illnesses attributed to lemon slices in beverages.

So though this is not necessarily cause for alarm, be aware that lemon slices may have the potential to make you sick.

FDA warns that Botox can cause death

>> February 09, 2008

Sticking one of the most deadly poisons in your face might just kill you.

I have this crease between my eyes and have said repeatedly I'd like to get botox to do away with it. I may rethink my plan now in light of the Food and Drug Administration's warning which includes both Botox, a wrinkle-specific version called Botox Cosmetic, and its competitor, Myobloc.

The deaths being investigated all pertain to children with cerebral palsy who were given Botox for spasticity in their legs, but they are also probing reports of illnesses in people of all ages who used the drugs for a variety of conditions, including at least one hospitalization of a woman given Botox for forehead wrinkles.

According to Dr. Russell Katz, FDA's neurology chief, it's not hundreds, but a relative handful of cases. However, the agency warned that patients receiving a botulinum toxin injection for any reason -- cosmetic or medical -- should be told to seek immediate care if they suffer symptoms of botulism, including: difficulty swallowing or breathing, slurred speech, muscle weakness, or difficulty holding up their head.

Curb Cramps, Lower Your Blood Pressure, and Get A Great Night's Sleep

>> February 02, 2008

By adding 1 1/2 oz. of pistachios to their diet, subjects saw their blood pressure plunge 4.8 points during anxiety-inducing situations! Each nut is rich in plant sterols and antioxidants that help control the body's response to stress, notes Penn State University researcher Sheila West, Ph.D. Eat one shot glass full of shelled nuts daily.

Drinking five cups of chamomile tea a day for two weeks will dramatically increase your body's levels of glycine, an amino acid proven to relieve muscle spasms and soothe frazzled nerves, British researchers report. And glycine levels will stay high for two weeks after you stop drinking the tea--great news, since glycine also boosts memory by enhancing the activity of chemical messengers in the brain!

Research proves peanut better and jelly sandwiches are an excellent antidote to insomnia! Why?

  • Peanut better is loaded with snooze-inducing tryptophan.
  • All-fruit grape jelly, according to new Italian research, is chockfull of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin.
  • Eating bread four hours before bed shaves up to nine minutes off the time it takes you to fall asleep, Australian research reveals.
