Watermelon -- The Benefits Of This Summertime Delight

>> August 27, 2008

My son and I have eaten 2 watermelons in the past week and a half. We love it! And right now it's in-season, so we're getting our fill! I ran across an article in the August 11, 2008, issue of First, touting this fruits great benefits. Did you know:
  • By eating just 2 cups of watermelon a day you can slash your risk of sun-related skin damage by 40 percent? According to the Journal of Nutrition, watermelon is nature's richest source of lycopene, an antioxidant that scavenges the free radicals that cause sunburn and wrinkling.
  • By eating a few slices after dinner you can extend the deep stages of your sleep by 27 percent? Watermelon's polysaccharide carbohydrates rev the body's output of serotonin. When serotonin rises at night, the brain is less sensitive to disruptive stimuli during sleep.
  • A daily serving of watermelon can hoist energy levels by up to 23 percent? Watermelon contains vitamin B6, which the body uses to synthesize feel-good dopamine. Plus, it's magnesium assists in the body's formation of adenosine triphosphate, which fuels cellular function for all-day zip.
  • Watermelon ensures quick recovery from summertime scrapes. It's packed with the amino acid citrulline, which the body converts to arginine, which speeds the delivery of white blood cells to injury sites and spurs the growth of new skin tissue.

Tip: Watermelon should be stored at room temperature because long-term refrigeration can sap nutrients and flavor. However, stick it in the fridge for 30 minutes before slicing to retain it's juiciness. A quick chill causes the fruit's cells to constrict and thus the juice stays in the slices instead of running out onto the cutting board.

Because We Can't Be Forever Young...

No matter how hard you work to stay healthy, unfortunately there will probably come a time when you will need to purchase medical supplies. For instance, my son broke his foot last summer and he had to use crutches (he went through 2 sets) and then after they took the cast off, I had to purchase a rocker boot for him to keep it in for the next 3 weeks. Hopefully, because you're working out and eating right, you will be healthy for years to come, but if you someday find yourself needing anything from a simple knee brace (shouldn't have ran that last mile) to a hernia belt, (should have pulled with your legs, not your gut) you can find over 15,000 discounted medical supplies from over 300 manufacturers at jrsmedical.com. They even have a medical blog where they showcase products so you can get in depth information on them. Here's to a healthy fall and winter!

Could Swimming Cause Your Thyroid To Slowdown?

According to Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., author of The Sinatra Solution: Metabolic Cardiology, "The chlorine added to swimming pools absorbs into skin and circulates to the thyroid, where it can hinder the gland's output of the energizing hormone thyroxine." So are you never to swim again? No, he just recommends that you soak in an Epsom salts bath after you take a dip since the magnesium in Epsom salts blocks chlorine from entering the bloodstream, keeping it away from your thyroid. Or, alternatively, you could take Ashwagandha. This herb helps convert thyroxine into triiodothyronine (T3) the most powerful thyroid hormone, which affects almost every process in the body, including temperature, growth, and heart rate.

Get Rid Of That Unsightly Hair!

>> August 26, 2008

I took the photo to the right at a race track a few years ago. That is NOT a shirt he's wearing - it's shaved into his back hair! It was hilarious at the time, however, as a woman, I can tell you I wouldn't want to cuddle up to that! He really should look into laser hair removal! Laser hair removal Melbourne offers laser hair removal using the latest SUPER INTENSE PULSED LIGHT (SIPL) techonology. SIPL is several times faster than other light-based removal systems and offers a safe, gentle, non-invasive way to remove your unwanted body and facial hair. How does it work? The SIPL system directs pulses of intense lamp light into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growth of new hair.

No more waxing, ingrown hairs, or growing your hair for next treatment! He could sure use it, could you?

Do You Know What Bodybuilding Supplements To Take?

>> August 24, 2008

Many years ago (around 15 - 20) my husband was really in to bodybuilding. (He still works out regularly, but is now leaner and more ripped, not as massive.) When he was at his biggest, he would take Joe Weider's Protein Powder everyday before he worked out. My father, who has always been very athletic, I can remember took creatine before he would work out. Do you know what either of these supplements is for, whether or not you need it, and what others think of it? IllPumpYouUp.com supplies the most effective bodybuilding supplements online -- over 150 brands with over 2000 products. In addition, they are one of the most affordable on the net. But possibly even more important to you, is their customer review section. For instance, here's what Mitch, from Southern Illinois, had to say about the Universal Animal Cuts, "On the end of my 2nd week of animal cuts, This stuff gives you amazing energy and focus... I've been doing 45min - 1hr of cardio in the morning and then a high intensity weight routine at night and I've still managed to lose about 10lbs while keeping all of my strength i had before i started my cutting cycle... Will DEFINITELY buy again." Visit them and you'll find great deals on bodybuilding and weight loss supplements, vitamins and minerals, fitness articles, and they even have a forum where you can contact other bodybuilders with your questions and concerns.

Linky Love

A few months ago I found a forum regarding blogging and there I met a bunch of great WAHMs. This group of gals are all trying to get blogs going to make a few dollars while staying home with their families. Since they've been so great to me I've added all their blogs in a drop-down box on the sidebar of my blog, and I'm going to list them here also. These blogs are mainly personal, though you'll find a few specialties. The titles should help you figure out what they're about. If you have some time, they'd love you to visit -- some are Entrecard members, so you can drop yours while you're there.

Is Colon Cleansing For You?

There is an untrue rumor that John Wayne's autopsy revealed 40 pounds of impacted fecal matter lodged in his colon. Nonetheless, that isn't to say that colon cleansing has no therapeutic value. The state of the gut has a profound influence upon our health. If you have a sensitive digestive system or perhaps you experience bloating, reflux or constipation, it may be because your gut is not in the best of health. I have a friend who occasionally does a 12-day fast to improve her digestive system. While I think that's great for her, I, on the other hand, have a hard time with fasting. For those of us that feel we just can't fast there are great alternatives in the form of natural colon cleanse formulas that you take with water, like the one from dual action cleanse. This particular product contains only natural ingredients such as Psyllium, Alfalfa, Pau D'Arco, Oat Bran, and Lactobacillus Acidophilus in a proprietary blend. Make your gut happy, feel trimmer, less bloated and notice more energy by trying a colon cleanse.

A Healthier Meatloaf

I love meatloaf but always feel guilty eating it. I just found this updated recipe for it, that contains 29 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, and just 250 calories, in the September, 2008 issue of Men's Health. I'm trying it out this week, I'll let you know what I think. Ingredients: 1 cup no-salt tomato sauce 1 lb. lean ground beef 2 egg whites 1 zucchini, grated 1 rib celery, finely chopped 1/2 small onion, chopped 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats 1/4 cup toasted wheat germ 2 Tbsp sliced black olives 1/4 tsp ground black pepper Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat 9 x 5 pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine 1/4 cup of the tomato sauce with the rest of the ingredients and use your hands to mix together. Press the mixture into the pan, and pour the rest of the tomato sauce on top. Bake for 50 minutes. Let sit 5 - 10 minutes before serving.

Help For Acne Sufferers

I have a teenage son and about a year ago he started going through that 'teen acne' phase. He actually had it a lot worse than I, or his father, ever did. Being the mom that I am, I, of course, nagged him to wash his face. The response I got was that he didn't care about having zits because all his friends had them too. Well I cared! Not just because of his looks at the time, but because I felt it probably wasn't good for him, and because I didn't want him left with huge scars he would regret later in life. So, I explained to him that his zits were caused by a combination of the dead skin cells that are on top of his skin getting clumped together with the extra oil from his hormonal body and that by washing his face twice a day with warm water and a mild cleanser he could help avoid breakouts. The first two cleansers I bought him were apparently not right for his skin type, but the third must have been more balanced. (not too mild, but not so harsh that he produced more oil.) I also found other great tips and solutions by searching the Internet. (I personally was looking for a natural solution.) One of the sights that I found helpful was Acne.com. In addition to tips and solutions for the treatment of teen acne, Acne.com is the leading authority in all things acne. They have articles on acne prevention, the causes of acne, the types of acne and more. If you have acne, or know a teen with it, head over to Acne.com to learn your options.

15 Lesser Known Reasons To Exercise

>> August 22, 2008

You know that exercise helps keep your heart healthy by reducing blood pressure, preventing cholesterol buildup, increasing the elasticity of your arteries, and lowering your triglyceride levels, but here are fifteen, not-so-well-known, ways workouts can better your body. 1. Strengthen Bones. Weight-bearing activities cause bones to become denser. Stronger bones are less likely to succumb to osteoporosis! 2. Alleviate Asthma. Do you skip work, outs because you fear an asthma flare-up? Studies show that regular exercise actually reduces the number of inflammatory cells in the lungs, actually easing symptoms. 3. Reduce Macular Degeneration Risk. Working out at least three times a week may reduce your risk for age-related macular degeneration by up to 70 percent! Regular exercise helps prevent irregularities in blood-vessel walls that contribute to vision woes. 4. Ease The Blues. Light physical activity reduces the odds of feeling blue by up to 40 percent! 5. Cut Your Risk Of Periodontal Disease. Regular exercisers cut their risk of periodontal disease by more than half. (Except in smokers.) It’s probably that exercise helps the body regulate sugars that feed bacteria in gum tissue. 6. Fight Cancer. You can reduce your risk of ovarian and breast cancer by as much as one-third simply by doing something physical four days a week. 7. Fend Off Colds. In one Seattle study, 70 percent of women who worked out regularly avoided catching a cold all year long. 8. Break Free From The Midday Slump. Instead of downing an espresso, try walking or biking. Low-intensity exercise can increase the level of feel-good chemicals in the body and decrease fatigue by 65 percent, a University of Georgia study reveals. 9. Rev Up Your Sex Drive. Women who cycled for 20 minutes before viewing a racy clip experienced 21 percent more arousal than those who skipped the workout. 10. Fewer Headaches. Yes, strenuous exercise can trigger migraines for some, but low-intensity workouts actually stave off the pain. Evidence suggests that keeping your heart rate elevated for at least 20 minutes three times a week may reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches. 11. Heal Faster. Ohio State researchers found that exercisers’ wounds healed 10 days sooner than nonexercisers’. Keeping fit reduces excessive inflammation around the injury, aiding recovery. 12. Sleep Better. Thirty minutes of exercise four days a week helps people fall asleep about 12 minutes earlier and sleep 42 minutes longer, find California researchers. 13. Get Smarter. Forty minutes of cardio four times weekly can double the amount of blood flow to the hippocampus (the brain’s memory center), enhancing recall. 14. Reduce Your Diabetes Risk. Studies show that if the 41 million prediabetic Americans exercised daily for just 30 minutes, they’d delay getting Type 2 diabetes for approximately 11 years. 15. Live Longer! Results from a 12-year University of South Carolina study indicate that, no matter what the scale says, regular pavement pounders live about nine years longer than their sedentary counterparts. source: Fitness, August 2008

Can You Be Thin And Unhealthy?

>> August 20, 2008

The American populace, in general, is overweight. But just because you are 'blessed' as someone who is of a 'normal' weight, does that mean that you are healthy? Not necessarily. You may still be at risk for elevated levels of blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar if you are leading an inactive lifestyle. Would it be more accurate to check your Body Mass Index (BMI), since that is the standard that has been used since the 50's? The problem with measuring BMI is that some "physically active individuals, who have more lean tissue than their sedentary counterparts, often have a BMI that classifies them as obese when they actually have healthy body fat levels. And the converse is sometimes true in that, a thin, but inactive individual, may have a BMI that puts them within normal ranges when they actually have high levels of body fat." So what is the answer? Since It's Not Your Weight That Matters--It's How Much of Your Weight is Fat, the International Sports Sciences Association, recommends using a quick but reliable method of measuring various body circumferences (e.g. neck, thighs, upper arm, waist, hip) to assess total body fat. The ISSA feels that this method better determines one’s body composition (fat vs muscle) than BMI alone. The following press release provides more information: Fitness Assessment: Measure Your Fat, Not Your Weight. It’s not how much you weigh, it’s how much of your weight is fat. Simple test determines your fat content, health risks. Carpinteria, CA – August 20, 2008 - Within the past week, the American Heart Association, Journal of the American Medical Association and the American Cancer Society have cited new studies that seem to indicate the deteriorating health of Americans may not be related solely to weight--but to declining overall fitness levels. While it is virtually impossible today to remain oblivious to the importance of exercise for staying healthy, there has been a marked emphasis on “weight” versus “fitness” in western society’s perception of health and wellness. Consequently, many people of “normal” weight continue to be uniformed of the fact that they may still be at risk for elevated levels of blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar if they lead a sedentary (inactive) lifestyle. It has long been known that there are adverse effects associated with physical inactivity. Adults who are less active are at greater risk of dying of heart disease and developing diabetes, colon cancer, and high blood pressure. Illnesses related to physical inactivity and poor diet cause at least 300,000 deaths each year in the U.S. Body mass index (BMI), which is calculated through a height-to-weight ratio alone has been the standard method of measuring a person’s “fatness” or “thinness” since 1950’s and 60’s, when obesity was becoming a noticeable medical concern in the U.S. As a result, being at a “normal” BMI weight is not necessarily a reliable indicator of health. In fact, physically active individuals who have more lean tissue than their sedentary counterparts, as well as taller people, often have a BMI that classifies them as obese when they actually have healthy body fat levels. Likewise, and more dangerous, slender or thin but inactive individuals often have a BMI that puts them within normal, or even underweight, ranges when they actually have high levels of body fat. Because of the overemphasis on BMI that has developed over the last few decades, these “skinny fat” people often remain unaware that they are at an elevated risk for developing diseases typically associated with obesity until they are already facing health issues. According to the International Sports Sciences Association, an organization that has educated and certified personal trainers for more than 2 decades, using a quick but reliable method of measuring various body circumferences (e.g. neck, thighs, upper arm, waist, hip) to assess total body fat better determines one’s body composition (fat vs muscle) than BMI alone. Measuring circumferences also provides personal trainers and clients with a very easy way to gauge clients’ progress. “For people to begin to take a proactive approach to their health, they really need to know what their percentage of fat versus muscle is.” said Dr. Sal Arria, CEO and Co-Founder of the ISSA. Dr. Arria goes on to add, “most studies have shown that by just adding ONE circumference measurement at the waist to BMI, you can better predict a patient’s risk for type 2 diabetes and for all-cause mortality. Waist circumference is also about twice as good at predicting future coronary heart disease than BMI alone.” The ISSA believes that personal trainers and health clubs should be utilizing circumference measurements as another tool to assess body fat because trainers can achieve proficiency with a few hours of practice and when done properly, the results can be replicated. Patrick Gamboa, ISSA Vice President of Education, cautions that a person’s true fitness cannot be assessed by body measurements alone. True fitness must also take into account strength, aerobic capacity and flexibility measurements to most accurately predict longevity. Most gyms offer this type of assessment for free to their members. About the ISSA Since 1988, the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) has provided certification and continuing education to more than 100,000 wellness professionals in 85 countries around the globe. The ISSA offers a core personal training certification as well as eight additional specialized fitness certifications.

Pre-Race Caffeine May Improve Your Times

>> August 19, 2008

Want to run like Angelo Taylor? Then you may want to run through your local Starbucks first! A recent study investigated if caffeine ingestion improves 5-km time-trial performance in well-trained and recreational runners. The result was that both groups of runners advanced by an average of 10 to 12 seconds (1.1% - 1.0% better) than those taking a placebo. So for that extra kick, try downing a double espresso or a tall coffee (subjects were given 95 mgs of caffeine, the equivalent of an eight-ounce cup of coffee) 30 to 60 minutes before competition. Another Great Snack -- Blueberries!

>> August 15, 2008

Blueberries are an important part of a healthy diet. Although they are not a "cure-all," they contain a number of substances that are thought to have health benefits. Here are just a few:

  • In a recent study, scientists in New Zealand found that blueberries may be able to calm hunger pangs. The researchers fed a group of rats blueberry extract before a meal and found that the rodents ate 9 percent fewer calories than those who didn't receive the compound! "Antioxidants may trigger receptors in your upper intestine that tell your brain you're full," says lead researcher Adbdul Molan, Ph.D.
  • In another study, neuroscientists discovered that feeding blueberries to laboratory rats slowed age-related loss in their mental capacity. "The compound that appears responsible for this neuron protection, anthocyanin, also gives blueberries their color and might be the key component of the blueberry’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties."
  • And yet another study, this one at Rutgers University in New Jersey, "identified compounds in blueberries called proanthocyanidins that promote urinary tract health and reduce the risk of infection by preventing bacteria from adhering to the cells that line the walls of the urinary tract."

Not all of the theories above have yet been tested on humans, but even so, we are still aware that blueberries are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber, while being low in fats and sodium. Once again, nature made it best! Have a handful today! Sources: Men's Health, September 2008 http://www.blueberry.org/health.htm

Almonds For Your Health

>> August 11, 2008

It's been known that almonds have a beneficial effect on your cholesterol. But recently scientists found that adding almonds to a healthy diet helps significantly lower blood pressure, too!
The likely reason? Almonds are rich in magnesium, which has been shown to reduce hypertension. Grab an ounce or two of the nuts a day; that's about the same amount the study participants consumed.
Another study found that almonds "may also contribute towards controlling glucose levels in people with type-2 diabetes." The study suggests that, "because almonds slow down the absorption of carbohydrates in the body, they may assist in the management of diabetes." But aren't almonds loaded with calories and fat? Yes, but other studies have shown that almonds, when eaten in moderation, "do not cause one to gain weight; instead, they give the individual the satiety sensation and keep him from overeating." So limit yourself to no more than two handfuls a day. Sources: Men's Health, September 2008 http://www.natureschoice.co.za/almonds.htm

Positive Effect Of Eating Low-Carb

I know quite a few men who feel that cutting carbs (think South Beach or Atkins) is their key to weight-loss. Well, here's some good news about this type of controversial diet. University of Connecticut researchers found that men who cut carbs reduced markers of plaque buildup on their artery walls to a greater extent than men who slashed their fat intake. Carb restriction lowers your blood levels of the hormone insulin," says study author Jeff Volek, Ph.D., R.D. "That helps reduce the inflammation that contributes to atherosclerosis." One more finding: Low-carb eaters who also lifted weights three times a week achieved the best results of all.

You Can Help In The Fight Against Alzheimer's

Do you know somebody that has, or had, Alzheimer's Disease? Most of us do. Personally, I have a friend whose father had it. He was a vibrant, tall, strong, man and at first it almost seemed funny. He might not remember something that happened just minutes before, or maybe he thought something that happened long ago happened yesterday, or he'd say something that had nothing to do with anything. Then it became scary. I remember the time we all went on vacation together and one of the sons found him walking around the parking lot because he didn't know where he was. And then, it became sad. This once strong man needed care 24/7. It wore on the entire family. Besides seeing him in such a state, nerves were raw and arguments would flare because someone wasn't doing as much as the others, and he couldn't do anything for himself. Right now there is no cure for Alzheimer's, only treatment of the symptoms. However, maybe it doesn't have to always be this way. By teaming up with the Alzheimer's Association, you can walk with a purpose – and move us closer to a world without Alzheimer's. The Alzheimer's Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research – and volunteers of all ages, such as yourself, are needed to help in the fight against Alzheimer's. Do you want to help? Teams are needed and you can start one in your area. Just click below to register as a team captain for a walk in a neighboring city. (Walks are being held in more than 600 cities.) You will be provided all the tools you need to get started. Invite at least three people to join you, and have them ask three other people to join also, and before you know it, you'll have a large team! The walks are coming up soon. They are held in the fall and are usually no more than 3 miles -- however, the one closest to me is less than a mile! So whether you are a seasoned athlete, or a couch potato, you can still join in! It's awful to think that every 71 seconds, someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Team up with the Alzheimer's Association to help us fight it. Sponsored by Alzheimer's Walk

Are You Exercising And Gaining Weight?

Research confirms that intense exercise affects the sexes very differently. According to the August 11, issue of First, 75 percent of women (versus just 9 percent of men) end up eating more calories than they burn! And we're talking 80 percent more calories than usual! So what should you do to combat becoming ravenous after working out? Have a snack that contains protein and carbohydrates 30 minutes before exercising. This preempts post-workout hunger by giving the brain time to register fullness. Plus, the food combo prolongs satiation. Try 2 Tbs. of peanut butter on a few rice crackers. Or, the August 2008, issue of Prevention suggests a few, good, post-exercise snacks, depending on what you did, to refuel without eating back all the calories you burned.

  • If you walked for 30 minutes, just have a glass of water.
  • For 45 minutes of cardio intervals, snack on a 100-calorie snack, like a cup of fat-free yogurt and handful of Cheerios.
  • Go for a 6-mile power walk? Eat a 150-calorie snack, like half a PB&J sandwich. (light on the PB)
  • And if one hour of strength-training is what you did today, eat a regular meal within half an hour of finishing your session.

Sun Savvy

>> August 01, 2008

Take these interesting sun facts from the August 11, issue of First into account this summer. Transparent lip gloss has been shown to increase the intensity of the penetration of the sun's UVA and UVB rays (like a magnifying glass), making lips more susceptible to burning and long-term damage. Be sure to apply SPF 30 balm under gloss or opt for one that contains sunscreen to protect your lips. The lycopene in 4 Tbs. of cooked tomatoes boosts skin's resistance to sunburn by 33 percent -- a big improvement over raw tomatoes. The heat weakens tomatoes' cell walls, making lycopene more easily absorbed by the body.
